5 Facts You Should Know About Tattoo Prices

 

I actually have a few bits of custom ink myself, so I’m never shocked when someone asks me about tattoo dos & don’ts. The questions that always seem a little tough to answer tend to revolve around tattoo prices. As it turns out, most folks out there don’t have a clue about what goes into setting a price for this kind of artwork. This isn’t meant in an insulting way — you don’t know what you don’t know. There was no real process.

The tattoo studio I walked into for my first tattoo was one that was pretty well-known in the area & even got high marks from my dad. Everything looked clean & the staff seemed nice enough. Before I knew it, I got a price breakdown for my prospective artwork. I had the money, and while I didn’t want to part ways with it, I did go to this studio for this reason, so I did the thing. A couple hundred bucks lighter & feeling way cooler, I left & went home. To this day, two decades later, I have no idea what the rationale was behind the price I received. Still, I paid.

A couple of years later, I got two fairly large tattoos on both of my forearms from the same artist at the same tattoo studio. Again, I chose the design & got a price. No rationale, simply a quote for services rendered. Each was less than my previous tattoo, but no small potatoes.

I mention all of this when it comes to tattoo prices because when people ask about what a tattoo will cost, there’s a lot that goes into the price you’ll get. Here are just some of the more prominent factors:

Size of Tattoo: The bigger the tattoo, the more work that goes into it. This means that the price of your work will go up.
